NEUROSCIENCE + ART

Professor Victoria Vesna discussed an individualistic topic this week known as Neuroscience and Art. The lectures included videos. One video that left an impression incorporated Franz Joseph Gall’s discovery of the brain and its twenty-seven separate organs. There twenty-seven organs were showed on the phrenology chart and compared to the human brain. After the human brain was analyzed, he then compared it to an animal’s brain, and concluded that there were nineteen of the twenty-seven sections of the brain were common between the humans and animals. This then solidifies information people have been told for year, that humans are not much different than animals. The main difference between the human and animal brain is that humans are significantly more developed. Each section of the brain can be compared to a muscle. Week 2-Unit 2: Math & Art

The material that influenced me the most for the week 2 assignment was through the resources and information provided simply through Professor Vesna’s lectures. I remember attending the science museum for Gunter Von Hagens Body Worlds Exhibition and found myself fascinated with how plastination was able to preserve and accurately show the many layers of our body. http://www.bodyworlds.com/en/gunther_von_hagens/life_in_science.html Another personal experience I had with the material covered in this weeks lesson was X-Ray, CAT Scans, and MRI’s. I was injured a few times during my 4 years at UCLA and had a fair share of doctor appointments and full body scans. Medicine + Technology + Art

This week professor Vesna’s lectures provided the students with an in-depth analysis of how the human body and technology and art are related. This was the first time I really took time to think about the direct relation medicine had in this field. The Hippocratic Oath from Edelstein also showed the relationship as well when he referred to the medicine as his art or “my art.” (https://goo.gl/images/x5uGiH) Edelstein wasn’t the only reference which helped me better understand the relationship art and medicine shared. Silvia Casini also spoke about the relationship. She described the relationship by talking about MRI examinations and looked at the images as if they were more than science. In the article Casini say’s, “the main components of an MRI examination are devices capable of enacting a process of identity-construction and mirroring…through MRI’s sound, subjects become aware of the wholeness of their bodies…” (Casini, 2011).
