SPACE + LITERATURE + ART

Throughout my life, Space has been the one field related to science that I would say has the most noticeable relation to art. Space has led people to questions the origin of the universe and possibly the origin of humans and other life forms. One type of art form we see a direct relation between art and science is through the novel of Carl Sagan’s, Pale Blue Dot. This novel address human philosophies in relation to the universe and the future of humanity. Movies like Star Wars, Interstellar, and The Martian all include spaceships, space travel, and colonization in space. Though many of these movies are viewed as just “fictional” movies, these innovative methods are useful to introduce the idea of space to the human population.Image resultImage result for interstellarRelated image

This week Professor Victoria Vesna’s lectures were intended to discuss and show the interaction and relationship between space, literature, and of course, art. Professor Vesna summed up the triangular relationship as, a chain of information that allows progress (Vesna Lecture). In addition, professor Vesna made it clear that the chain begins with addressing the information and problems related to space and science. Next is to implement the possible ways to solve these problems. Artwork and novels explore these problems and attempt to solve them in a fictional way, but these ideas and problems can only be solved by science. To make it a little easier to understand, many of these scenarios and events are hard to understand and solve because they are simply fictional and not real. The only way to really conquer this is to build real life machines and scenarios that allow space travel/exploration to grow.
As earlier mentioned, Interstellar, is a Hollywood hit movie that introduced certain space theories to all of its’ viewers. Specifically, this movie introduced the theory of wormholes. Coincidentally, Pilot Cooper has found a new planet to live on to save the all humanity and living organisms on earth. This addition of a new planet found for human kind to live on instead of earth was “put to life” in the art form Interstellar. NASA is also an organization that has fought and worked tirelessly to change the fictional idea of space exploration and inhabitation into a reality. This has been done through their many years of their rovers that have been strategically placed on different planets within our solar system. Carl Sagan, NASA, and Professor Victoria are three separate sources in society today that have helped society gain a better understanding of each sources efforts.
